Schluckebier Sand Prairie is one of the last surviving remnants of the 14,000 acre Sauk Prairie that gave the local area its name. Prior to settlement, the prairie covered the vast plain between the Wisconsin River and the Baraboo Hills. To this day it supports a wide variety of native insects, plants, and wildlife rarely found elsewhere thanks to a management regime of prescribed fire, brushing, and invasive species control that keeps the prairie healthy. The site is owned by The Prairie Enthusiasts and was designated a State Natural Area in 2006.
