Kindling Chaos is an ephemeral sculpture constructed entirely from natural wood without nails, wire, or adhesives, then decomposed through a live fire performance. Inspired by cycles of nature, human history, and impermanence, the work unfolds over a controlled burn as flames, light, and glowing embers continuously reshape the sculpture.

Roger Reynolds is a self-taught sculptor who works with natural wood and fire. Inspired by human’s ancient connection to fire—creating feelings of comfort, joy, and awe—he builds temporary sculptures from twigs, branches, and logs, using no fasteners or synthetic materials. His influences include Andy Goldsworthy and Patrick Dougherty, particularly their focus on working directly with natural materials and impermanence. As each sculpture is built, Reynolds is always considering how it will burn; fire is the second phase of the work. He emphasizes sustainability: all materials are natural and locally sourced, nothing is manufactured, and nothing goes to landfills. Once lit, the sculpture transforms through flame, collapse, and embers, revealing new forms as it decomposes and returns its elements to the environment.
