Program Details

The Driftless Region Día de Muertos team presents a community ofrenda dedicated to curanderas (healers with traditional medicinal plants) at the Decomposium, featuring marigolds grown locally. Visitors can witness and participate in building the ofrenda, exploring its roots from pre-Hispanic traditions to contemporary practice. The program will include an Aztec ceremony, a candlelight closing with live music by The Braided Janes, a hands on writing workshop led by Lesley Salas, and spiritual guidance by Gloria Alatorre.

To participate in the ceremony portion of the event, please register.

6:15: Participants meet at front of building. Candle-lighting begins.

6:30: Procession begins to ofrenda.

The Mexican Folkart Collective are Mexican artists living in the Midwest who promote Mexican culture through popular art and traditions to create awareness, empathy, and community between Mexico and the US. Some of the artists have a traditional heritage passed down from generation to generation, and some are experimenting with a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques. In collaboration with Driftless Curiosity Inc., they have organized the Driftless Region Día de Muertos celebration for the past five years.
