Richard L. Cates Jr. and his family own a pasture-based farm and raise grass-fed beef in Wyoming township, near Spring Green, Wisconsin. He is a former lecturer in soil science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and has served on the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Board of Directors and the USDA Secretary’s Advisory Council for Beginning Farmers and Ranchers. His family has been recognized for their soil and water conservation work, including receiving the 2013 Wisconsin's Leopold Conservation Award.
